My oldest son caught our neighbor hitting and spraying our dog through the fence while we are at work. HELP!?

I am buying a camera to mount under the roof. Anyone have a suggestion on cheap security system that is wireless? Looking into the CD35VPW Vandal Proof - Color Dome Camera - Indoor/Outdoor...Our neighbors grandson that lives with her and her daughter pokes at our friendly "trained" black lab. Now our dog barks at them through the fence, and my son caught the grandma spraying him with pepper spray while my husband and I are @ work. Luckily it was windy and she missed his eyes. I gave him a good bath and lots of love. He is an inside dog after we get home, but I am worried she may poison him, or worse...so I am getting the security camera. Just wanted to know what all our rights are as far as taking action are concerned?

  1. well you should look at what your dog is doing to deserve this. Why don't you go talk to you neighbours?? Maybe you are that person who has the really loud bad dog on the block and you just don't know it!
  2. ya i dont see a problem with u getting a camra but its awful what there doing to ur dog
  3. well i would take this guy to court. they dont have a right to spray your dog for no reason. that guy is an idiot.
  4. what dumb and mean neighbors you have. have you spoken to them about this? That is a good idea to catch them on video, so you have evidence to back you up.

  6. Well, in addition to the camera, you need to be considerate as a dog owner and teach him to not bark at your neighbor... a bark collar, whichever kind you wish, should work fine...
  7. hey if you can get proof that 1)your dog isn't harming them before she sprays it and 2) that she is spraying him when he isn't doing anything but barking at her, which isn't a threat its just a warning from a dog saying, get the hell away from my yard. lol. I would be pissed and talk to the neighbor, explain to her that if you just ignore the dog, the dog will ignore you, but if her grandson keeps teasing him thru the fence of course the dog is going to bark at him and get "mean" would you want to be poked at? lol. I had a schnauzer when i was growing up and she was teased by little kids when shes was just a puppy and after that never liked little kids, she wouldn't hurt them if they came in the house, but if they went near her or tried to touch her she would get very nervous. I had her snap at a friends face cuz the friend got too close to her face! haha, i warned her. They are just creating something bad that you have worked so hard to train. talk to the police and find out what you can do, and then kindly talk to your neighbor and explain to her what you expect and how your dog works, i would still set up a camera if you can, then if they still do it, you have proof, hell tape your recording with grandma so everyone knows you warned her.
  8. the camera idea is good but mount it were the neighbor want see it and also put one up to see what your dog is doing during the day, im not saying you have a bad dog or anything like that. but maybe the dog is barking or something like that because you and your husband are gone. my boxer does that when me and my husband are gone and he gets to be inside. but what your neighbor is doing is wrong. this lady can get in trouble for abusing your dog but first you need proof that its happening, but i hate that you have to let your dog go through that again.
  9. Call the Humane Society, tell them what your neighbors are doing. Animal cruelty charges may be enforced. Yeah, it is a good idea to get a camera.
  10. The camera should be aimed into your own back yard, not theirs or there could be problems. I suprised a neighbor once for squirting my dog with water with return fire. He didn't realize I was out in my yard when he watered my dog through the fence, I watered him back! Both dog and neighbor were quiet after that. LOL
  11. a security camera is a good idea we have a wireless security system. although you should be communicating with your neighbors better. why can't you go over there and ask them what's going on? your dog is probably a nuisance and these neighbors are at their breaking point, you could fix the problem before it gets worse.
  12. I dont' know what your rights are because they vary state to state. You will have to look it up butyou do have right to security camera. Is there any way to build a fake fence that is a few feet back from where the real fence is... that way the kid can't tease too bad. someone else had great info on the camera... and there wa post about potential problems. I liek the post about calling teh human society too.
  13. This is one of many reasons why my dogs are not out in my yard when I'm not home. Too many bad things can happen.
  14. You need to contact your local animal enforcement/shelter to report it and fill out a complaint slip. So if anything does happen to your dog you might have a case. Do they spray the dog for barking? If so, I had to buy bark collars for both my dogs from Petsmart. They worked the first time i put them on. I do everyday have to put the bark collars on them when the dogs go out and we go to work. But its worth it so the neighbors dont get angry
  15. call an animal police and report it and they will set up cameras themselves.
  16. Shoot the bitch
  17. Since your son witnessed the crime and you have proof of this, you can file charges against them easy... Just call your local police and make a complaint, the police will come out, and then it is on record so if anything happens to your dog, they are the first ones the police will be looking at, and I really hope this does not happen at all poor dog, I hope none got on the dog at all. I would also go talk to the neighbors and see why they think they have the right to do this, which in the laws eyes, the dog is in its own yard, they have no right to molest your dog, any which way or form.... now, if your dog got into their yard it would be a different story. do not let this go by, and I am sorry your having problems with the mean, irritating neighbors..... just keep your dog close and watch out for the dogs safety. legally, they can be fined.....by the police and possibly by a court if you push it to that length, endangerment to a dog, for no probable cause.....other than being cruel to your dog. 18. Until you get a cam installed, just hang up a fake one..any old cam that looks right..or even a box with a hole in it will look like a hidden camera. ... Be sure and tell the neighbor that you have installed a security camera..and it will keep them from doing more harm. You see, you can catch them on your camera..but the harm is already done by then..preventative is better than prosecution.
  19. In my opinion, the best course of action is direct confrontation. Tell your neighbours you got a camera, for whatever reason, which revealed them pepper spraying your dog. Unfortunately, we live in a society where dogs still have less rights over humans. From a legal perspective, your neighbours, before spraying, should have contacted the local RSPCA, Humane Society or the police, enabling them to give you 'a friendly warning', explaining there is a problem, which allows you to take measures to prevent future unwarranted cause for damage. Indeed, you were lucky it was windy. However, your neighbours committed an offence, legally, by potentially 'damaging' your property, since dogs are considered property by Law. Therefore, your neighbours are in the wrong and you have the Law on your side, this time. Since this is a first, that you are aware of, you can approach your neighbours in a 'friendly', reasonable and rational manner. The fact they now know that you have a witness, will make them think twice, with the added camera, depending on the nature of their reaction and the behaviour of your dog. The fact your dog has been provoked, unfortunately does not help you and which is part of life when we become dog parents. No matter how placid, if your dog, by protecting his/her territory were to attack one of the neighbour's kids, who can be real terrorists and totally at fault, but the dog pays the price. If it were to go to a Court of Law at any time in the future, an experienced dog handler will assess the nature of the dog. This will determine any potential fines or punishments. This type of legislation is applied in most countries that protect pets. What I do not understand, why the dog is outside when you are not at home? This is very difficult for most UK animal owners to comprehend, since a pet stays inside, whether you are in or out. If I were you, I'd keep my dog inside and hire a dog walker for a mid-day break. Just another approach and hope this provides some food for thought.
