- Personally, I would just look at magazine pictures and fly from there. Gather all your home and garden magazines, and go to their websites. (www.betterhomesandgardens.com or www.southernliving.com or www.architecturaldigest.com or others) I love the HGTV channel. Check out www.HGTV.com If you have no idea where to begin, ask yourself this question: Does my house have an open-floor plan or a closed-floor plan? If open, then you'll have to pick styles and colors to coordinate with the rest of the house. If closed, then you don't have to worry about it, unless it would be easy to be consistent anyway. Another important factor is measurement. Take the dimensions of floors, walls, windows, window panes, the ceiling, and anything else. Next, take some graph paper, and draw an aerial view of the room to scale. You'll get an idea of how big your furniture should be. When you find some real furniture, take those measurements, and make paper cut-outs of the furniture. After you have cut-outs of all the furniture you are considering, you can place them in various places on the graph paper, and you may find a suitable arrangement. You can also make drawings of the walls and windows and pretend to arrange paintings and window treatments or other decorations on them. You may be able to "fake decorate" to scale on a website. I've done it before on www.bhg.com. Take into account the amount of light you'll need or want.
