Design ideas? (Pics included)?

Well, I've been decorating my first apartment and I've kind of hit a rut in my creativity. I know I want some kind of rug and I know I want several paintings/pictures on the wall. Anyways, here are pics of my living room and my dining room (which are sort of connected). It isn't very clean right now but I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas that would go well with the decor I already have! http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b137/PacificoastHwy/triptoFLA006.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b137/PacificoastHwy/triptoFLA005.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b137/PacificoastHwy/triptoFLA004.jpg And that plastic shelf thing is NOT going to stay there (in the living room) Also, you can't tell in the picture, but my walls are painted already; they are a tan color. The ceiling is white.

  1. youve got a great beginning - all your neutrals are solid. what you need now is color and texture first pick your FAVORITE colors (start with 3) as to art on the wall take a photo, have a friend(or yourself) paint a picture or find a print/photo/painting of something you really like with those three colors IN it. one can predominate but you might want them fairly even in amounts this is your focal or inspirational piece. so take your time and care in picking it (and yes you can change it anytime- just think thru what you will do with the room when you do) if you do an area rug try to again pick up those three colors with one of them predominating. something with a nice texture that is nice to lie down in front of the tv on. then add your accents pillows on the couch in different textures and colors (here is where you can add bright soft, or rich pops of color - just pick up bits of color from picture and rug) Have fun!! last is accessories instead of the plasticy thing maybe a tall book case in rich wood (i know its another neutral but trust me it works) also every thing in the room except the lamp is horizantal - you need some vertical here. then add the colors of books and a "few" chachki's (too many would be cluttered) you could add a throw of some kind across the ottoman again in one of your colors another texture is good here. i am sure you know all this but sometimes it takes an outside eye to remind one. most of all have fun and enjoy rj
  2. I completely agree with what the above person said. My suggestion would be to get rid of those blinds you have on the sliding doors, and replace them with fabrics. In fact I think it would be cool if you did the entire wall in fabric drapery. It would add a splash of colour without actually painting the wall. Plus it can be changed on a whim.
  3. Okay, I'm going to go contrary to the two previous posters. I love the b&w chairs and the black console in the LR. Your furniture tells me you have a modern aesthetic, but that neutral color on the wall does not. So just to give you a different direction, I think you should get rid of that neutral and go funky/mod. I could see fuchsia, silver, black and white. With pops of lime green. I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out... I don't know what color your sofa is, but if it's black, what would look really cool are jumbo silver and white horizontal stripes running on the wall behind the sofa (which, if I'm correct, also runs into the dining room). There's a link below of a bathroom w/ horiz. stripes, but they're much thinner than I'm picturing. I say 18" wide minimum, and you could use a glossy paint for the white as well. If silver/white is too much, maybe all white, but alternate glossy/matte. Then, if you're facing that wall, on the wall to the right (the end of the dr), I would do the accent color - fuscia, or lime green. If you can find a funky flocked wallpaper, that would be cool too. Since those walls are going to be crazy, I'd stick with white on the other ones, but that little one that shows in the hallway, where you have 3 small frames, paint that similar to your accent wall. Or paint it white, and paint huge frames around your real frames in the accent color or silver. But put lots of white and silver kitch in there - white ceramic deer antlers, maybe a flokati rug, and some shiny silver candelabras, and hang a funky light fixture in the DR. Your lucky bamboo on the console (dracaena) will look great as an accent to fuschia, and mod stuff is cheap to find and really cute and funky for a first apartment. You're young and hip now; I say you'll have the rest of your life to do neutral. Have fun while you can! Good luck.
