My Home Design

Need some decor ideas for this red room. Pic included.?

I hope you can see the pic. I'm keeping everything in the room - the paint, the furniture, the piano. I'm removing the leopard print scarf and the animal print decor (you probably can't see what little is there). What I want is something lively, probably floral/stripe, maybe french country. I need a new window scarf, would like to cover the pillows, add a little extra to it, maybe a throw rug in the center, maybe new pictures. I thought about an asian theme but around the corner is the kitchen/dining area and it is decorated with parisian street/wine bar decor. I didn't think that would flow well together. If you have any website to direct me to that would be great. Thanks. http://new.photos.yahoo.com/kcangel70/album/576460762321215386/photo/294928804164234959/1

  1. try a lot of light yellows and terracotta type colors to see if it would go nicely with your tastes. the light yellows will balance out the intensity of the red.
  2. better homes and gardens,I'm a helpless male redoing a house and ran across their website and it helped me out tremendously, I'm very happy with the way my home is turning out and have had alot of complements on it also good luck with yours
  3. The first thing I thought of for decoration when you said red room was asian theme. I don't think that would be bad with your kitchen/dining area because you don't want to blend the whole house together! Asian themes give good character. Also with those white couches the black and red asian themes would look awesome!!! Good luck on whatever you choose.
  4. A blk/red oriental rug -- plus you need red. blk pillows to tie into the red walls-- white couch is too stark-- I agree that the oriental will tie into your wine themes. http://www.AliciaTappDesigns.com Vintage labels on tiles
  5. I think with a bold colour like red, you will have to stick to no more than three basic colours in the room. I would suggest your red, gold, and white. If you can possibly swing the cost, get rid of the carpet and put down laminate flooring. Laminate wood flooring is not expensive, about 1.30 a sq ft, but it would totally change the look of the room. The carpet looks dingy next to the white sofa. Even if you are renting, most landlords are willing to pick up the cost for such a small improvement, since its much easier to keep clean than carpet. Its easy to put in yourself. ANyone can do it, and it takes only a few hours. THe second thing I would do is find a wallpaper with the same tone of red, in a stripe with gold and white, or straight red with a gold french design in it. I would put it on the wall with the sofa currently on ,and put either molding in white all the way around the room, or if that is too costly, then i would stencil a french fleur de lis scroll type design at ceiling level. if the wallpaper is too costly an idea for you, then I would at least do a faux colour wash glaze with a gold metallic, to help the walls glow and not have such a deep flat look. or wallpaper the wall with the sofa on it AND faux glaze the other red wall with a metallic gold wash. I would move the sofa in front of the window so that it is opposite the other sofa. REmember, you dont have to have furniture placed against a wall. you would have the sofa on one wall, the piano where it is now, and the other sofa facing the first one at about the place where you were standing when you took the picture. I would recover the pillows on the sofa with a red and gold brocade pattern on some of them, and solid gold on the others. I would also throw a gold throw over the back of the sofa that would not be against the wall. THe draperies, I would make a scarf off the same red/gold brocade that i used on the pillows, and also put white sheers , very full on the window. If you have blinds on the window, take them off. You need all the light you can get in a room with a dark colour like red. The two pics that you have on the wall, I would paint the frames with goldleaf paint ( available at home depot) and put them on the wall above the piano. I would also get a crystal vase , large, and fill it with flowers probably white ones, to sit on the piano. I would probably also get two small uplights to place on either side of the piano, at floor level , shining up on the wall, to brighten and highlight the piano area ( sort of a reverse pot light effect, coming from the floor up , shining on the wall) for the sofa on the far wall you need a large picture, in a gold frame, something light and soft, like a impressionist type of painting or print. It has to be large. I would flank either end of the sofa against the wall with small end tables, and buy two table lamps, probably brass. Take the floor lamp out. You need light on top of the piano as well. THe floor lamp could go to the side of the sofa that would be facing the other sofa, close to the wall.
