Remodeling bathroom?

My house was built in 1957. It has hardwood floors throughout. As you can imagine, the bathrooms are very outdated. My full bath has a rose color tile on the wall and rose and green tile floor. I also want to save money in the process as remodeling bathrooms can be expensive. I plan to replace updated tile in the shower area only and paint the rest of the bathroom. Is there a way I can remove the tile from the walls without having to pay someone a lot of money to remove the tile? Any suggestions is appreciated. Oh no, demo is more expensive. Any other suggestions. Can tile be painted? I am a first time homeowner so all of this is new to me.

  1. you cant remove the tile from the wall you are going to have to demo it and put up new walls
  2. It's unlikely that anyone, professional or not, will be able to remove the tiles without damaging the wall itself. So you'll probably be looking at some demolition work (removing tiles & wall) as well as reconstruction (new backerboard wall surface, new tile). . It's not difficult but it's messy. The drawing with the article noted below shows how the walls and tile around a bathtub should be installed; it would be pretty much the same thing in a shower: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/how-to/intro/0,,672069,00.html?xid=yahoo-answers&partner=yes
  3. It depends on what country you are in for construction methods. You can remove the old tiles yourself. Assuming you are in north america, you get a wrecking bar or hammer and chisel and take the tiles and drywall off together, exposing the studs (wooden 2x4 frame) Then I would redo the insulation before putting up new drywall. Then you have to tape, fill and paint before putting up new tiles. it is a big job.
  4. It is hard to say without seeing the tile, but most wall tile is attached directly to the sheetrock. This tile is actually very easy to take off of the walls with just a putty knife and a trim hammer. You just use the knife like a spatula and the tiles pop off the walls. If you put up new tile, no one will ever know. Just put up a light coat of mud before you re-tile. The floor tile will usually be more work to replace. So figure out your other options before you tear it out. If you do not know how do any of this, stop by a Home Depot or Lowes and see when they have classes, I learned how to do most of the stuff that you are talking about doing by reading some books. Just don't be afraid to experiment. You can save yourself amazing amounts of money by learning to do things yourself.
