How To Build Home Garden Knowledge Base

What is a ballpark cost per sq ft to build new home? I am thinking of selling my current home and using the equity to build a home on land I already own. I am looking for a fair middle-of-the-road estimate per sq ft that I can expect to build a semi-custom home. Nothing extravagant, but I don't want to feel like I just moved into a cookie cutter garden home. Likely 2story+basement 4bed/3.5bath approx 3500 sq. ft. The property is a few hundred undeveloped acres in the Southeast U.S. about 25 miles from an urban center. All utilities are available within 500 feet of the site.
What is the definition of a "garden home" in real-estate? There are a few choices of "building types" house, townhouse, mobile home, etc. What differentiates a "garden home" from the rest of the dwelling types?

How do you make a home nuclear generator to power electricity? Hey. I am tired of paying the electricity bill and got fined for taking my neighbours from his pond. Turned out he never watched tv or had a computer. When his bill went from £10 a month to £150 he got suspicious and found the cable and adaptor that I had connected to his fish pond in the back garden. Anyway thats another story. I did bury the cable but obviously he unearthed it. I know some people use solar plates to provide electricity for their home, but this costs too much. I don't have £25.000 to spare for this stuff. Also it is a rented place so I don't even own the roof. I was thinking of a nuclear generator that I can build at home and use to power my electricity usage off uranium or something. I am really good with building gadgets, and know where I can get weapons grade uranium from cheap. I just need advice or a walkthrough on how to build a mini nuclear power plant in my own kitchen.
Should a build a garden shed to get some privacy from my parents? I'm a male in my mid 20s living with my parents. Because of the tough economy I have a low paying job so I'm stuck living at home. As a temporary solution I have thought about building a garden shed in their backyard. I would use it to sleep at night sometimes and sometimes a place to have some privacy. The shed would be small but have a door with a lock. Some people think this is a cool idea while others think this is rediculus. I checked with my city and they do not require a permit for a shed. The shed would not have a restroom inside. This may be a small problem. The shed would have a light and a heater. Rooms for rent in peoples houses go for $ 900 per month in my area. I would call it a guest house or cottage. My room at my parents house is right next to thier room. In terms of the shed getting hot during the day I wouldn't go inside if its hot outside.

Do they use union laborers to build houses in your state? It seems like housing will be a lot more expensive if they use union laborers to build them. How come some states use only union labor and others use most likely undocumented workers? There is a big difference in pay scale and therefore a big difference in the cost to build. Do you have any state laws that require workers to be trained, licensed or union? This is a hard question to find a category for. Home and garden seemed the closest.

Are pressure treated timbers ok for use in a garden? We had just bought some from Home Depot as they said they we "good for use in gardens". Now I am reading that it may not be the case as the chemicals may leach into the soil. We are building a square foot garden 4x16 and I called them and they told me that if I don't plant near the wood I should be ok. But seriously, should I even take the chance?
Planning regulations for turning a detached garden room into self-contained rental unit -UK? A friend has a large 'garden room' at the back of the house and they are thinking of putting in all the services in order to rent it out as a 1-bedroom unit. What consents would be required? Would building regulations be needed as well as planning consent? It is a separate building to the main home and is just a simple store room. It does have light and heat but obviously no kitchen or toilet facilities. In order to make letting it legal and insurable what consents need to be in place?

I have a friend who's a landscaper who says to use the steel garden edging because it's maintenance free and will hold up. My fiance wants to use decorative bricks (from Lowes / Home Depot) but I'm told after a couple of years they will sink a bit and because un-level. Please help asap.

How should I go about building my own home? I have been purchasing and reading books on natural building techniques over the past month, and it seems to be exactly what I would like to do in my lifetime. What locations in the U.S. would be most ideal for a house with the following utilizations and materials: -Solar power (panels), heating (good sunshine, heat) -Earthbag building for house -Wind power -Radiant heating in the floor -Rainwater collection and storage (good rainfall) -Composting toilet -Quality soil for gardening and perhaps livestock/animals Thank you in advance.
If you could build the perfect home for you and your dogs...? What would be some of the requirements you would have? Here is what I would love to have someday: -5 acres for my aussies to run -a separate dog door from my house leading to a large dog area. I would like to keep some backyard and a vegetable garden free from dogs and their subsequent defication and destruction :) -an indoor and outdoor agility ring -pasture for a few sheep and geese, for herding practice -separate, fenced off area so I can run a breed rescue What would your home be like?
Is there anywhere that a disabled person can apply for help to have a car port built in their front garden? Is there a scheme to pay the costs for this work for someone who owns their home but cannot afford to have the work done. My aunt lives on disability and incapacity benefit only following an accident. She cannot walk and relies on her mobility car to get out of her home. Excessive parking restrictions in her area have made it impossible to ensure a space near her home which makes her virtually housebound and dependant on others. There is room in her front garden with some adjustments but she cannot raise funds. I am not in position to help her financially. Is there a scheme or charity that helps with this sort of thing in the UK? If so how much of such a cost might they assist with? She lives in an ex-council house on an estate. She tried council for marked bay which was approved but would have to be opposite side of road to my aunts house due to road layout and it needed her neighbours approval to go ahead. Sadly they refused which blocked the application.

How was Roman housing similar to our home today and how did it differ? The lower class Romans (plebeians) lived in apartment houses, called flats, above or behind their shops. Even tradesmen might have chosen to live in an apartment-building compound over their store, with maybe renters on the upper stories. Their own apartments might be quite roomy, sanitary and pleasant, occasionally with running water. But others were not that nice. In the flats an entire family (grandparents, parents, children) might all be crowded into one room, without running water. They had to haul their water in from public facilities. Fire was a very real threat because people were cooking meals in crowded quarters, and many of the flats were made of wood. They didn't have toilets in the flat so they had to use public ones. The upper class Romans (patricians) lived in single family homes, which in Ancient Rome meant the great grandparents, grandparents, parents, and kids of one family lived in a home together. Homes were made, quite often, of brick with red tile roofs, with rooms arranged around a central courtyard. The windows and balconies faced the courtyard, not the street, to keep homes safe from burglars. There were paintings on the walls and beautiful mosaics on the floor. There was very little furniture, and no carpeting. Wealthy Romans might have a house with a front door, bedrooms, an office, a kitchen, a dining room, a garden, a temple, an atrium, a toilet, and a private bath.

With brick columns and a covered porch/entry. I'd like something elegant and enchanting. (very pretty gardens surround entry) NO RED! Suggestions? I
Organic practices increase home value? Will creating an organic garden or using eco-friendly paints on my home help with it's value? I want to do some improvements but keep along the idea of things better for the environment. Are there woods that aren't chemically treated for floors or building a deck?

What plants/flowers would have been historically planted in the midwest at the turn of the century? My home (built 1917) had well-known gardens back in the '20s and we want to restore them. Does anyone know what sort of plants or flowers would have been common then? And which will keep the gardens looking colourful & lush in at least 3 of the seasons? (I'm in the Great Lakes region)

Irish Garden in Zone 5? Hello! I live near Cleveland, Ohio. I live in a 1 level ranch home built in 1959. We just had all of the landscaping/bushes torn out from the entire front of the house to have our basement waterproofed. I am left with a blank slate to work with and would like to take a swing at gardening. I love the look of Irish gardens. However, I do not know where to start with choosing plants to fit this look. Especially since I'm in zone 5. Also, I'm only strarting with the front landscape. I was wondering if there are certain key elements to a Irish Garden? And ideas, suggestions to get me started? Thanks!
how do i create a garden with plants from various zones and have it work? OK, i live in phoenix, Arizona and I'm from Salem, Oregon..... i hate living here but honestly my finances say oh well, but i have a small back yard and want to beautify it. my problem is that now i live in a dessert i have to do things that i never had to do before. like for example major pH balancing. my major problem is that I'm good with plants but i never really had to follow the zone rule because i could grow just about anything in Salem. in phoenix........not much and it has been quite a kick in the ego when it comes to my plants. i live in downtown phoenix and have a very small back yard (approx 15' X 25' ) and i want GREEN! i cant build a green house enclosure over the back yard because i unfortunately am limited by a home owner association (which by the way is some thing I've never experienced) but i still want beautiful plants that i used to have. any help would be appreciated and if you need further detail in regards to my plant selection please, just ask. i have many more questions regarding this subject and also with pH balancing because it is something i have never had to do in such a drastic amount. thanks, Cameron.
in 1943-44-45 ? Better Homes and Garden mag ran an article on a Round House There was an article in better Homes in or around those years featuring an round Home.,not costly to build
If there is a resurrection and a home in heaven, did you know it would be such a busy place? The New Earth can be read about in Revelation 21. 1. Build your own home and plant your own garden (Isaiah 65:21, 22) 2. Have a city mansion built by Christ (John 14:1-3.) 3. Sing and play heavenly music (Isaiah 35:10; 51:11; Psalm 87:7; Revelation 14:2, 3). 4. Worship before God's throne every Sabbath (Isaiah 66:22, 23). 5. Enjoy never-fading flowers and trees (Ezekiel 47:12; Isaiah 35:1, 2). 6. Meeting loved ones, patriarchs, prophets, angels etc. (Matthew 8:11; Revelation 7:9-17). 7. Study the animals of heaven (Isaiah 11:6-9; 65:25). 8. Fly and explore wonders of the universe without getting tired (Isaiah 40:31). 9. Listen to God sing (Zephaniah 3:17). 10. Realize fondest ambitions (Psalm 37:3, 4; Isaiah 65:24). 11. Being with Jesus (Revelation 14:4; 22:4; 21:3; 1 John 3:2). note: Hell is actually an event of annihilation where people cease to exist after resurrectiong from death 1000 years after the return of Christ. The Earth will be restored by fire. My idea is that if you didn't value life here, you won't deserve to continue and will cease existing.
How to handle the purple sunbird nesting at home? A couple of purple sunbirds are building a nest in my balcony (5th floor) (in India). I have a small garden up there and I think thats what attarcted them there. They daily come at around 9:30 in the morning and build the nest for around half-hour and they fly away again. They seem to be very shy and fly away whenever I try to enter the balcony. Any suggestions on how to handle them, so that they dont feel threatened? What should we feed them?

How close to my house foundation can I safely place a raised garden bed? Our building inspector said the ground around our home needs to slope away from the house so that we don't get water in the basement or problems but can we place a raised bed against the house? Its a brick house if thats a consideration with a concrete foundation/basement. If we place the rasied bed 4 - 6 feet away from the foundation, won't that make the yard area slope toward the foundation? If I put the raised bed next to the foundation, am I not causing the slope to go towards the house?

Can someone help me design a garden on my gravel patch....? We have a sunken hole we want to turn into a 'garden' of some kind. ...the land is very high at the rear of our house so its basically just a big hole in the ground with scrubby grass sides! NOT very pretty - we work from home so expect to have lots of visitors this summer - here are photos - http://myauctionpix.com/membertemplate.php?a_id=1321&bg_id=25....it has to stay gravelled as its also drainage for the whole garden/paddock that slopes into it (thats the concrete well on the right ) - under the gravel is drainage pipes - I'd love a paved area for a gazebo & maybe some kind of water feature - maybe also an american style stone BBQ table with seating area etc - we have a TON of stone as you can see so we can build walls and all sorts for nothing - if you have any ideas i would be grateful as i have NO idea what to do with this area? ( btw - the patio will have wooden rails in a few days so that wil be more 'finished' too....thankyou so much - i really need some inspiration !
Are there distance regulations for neighborhoods with zero lot lines? I live in a Garden home community. We have properties with zero lot lines, which means the neighbors yard and property line goes all the way up to the wall of my home. My wall is actually in their backyard and we share one fence. They built a patio for their 5 dogs, one of which is a sooner, within 12 inches of my wall and I can hear everything the family an dogs do. If the dogs scratch. I can hear their feet banging on the floor of the patio. Not to mention the barking of five dogs. It is noisy and annoying since my bedroom is on this side of the house. I can still hear them in my living area on the other side of the house. I know this is their property but seems like there would be regulations from building so close to someone else's home, even if it is their property, for this very reason.
It seems that small black beetles are eating the roots of my plants, what are they? I planted two of each plant in my garden. I live in South-west Florida. I of each plant is dead and they are on different sides of the garden. I put alot of water in the dead plants and alot of small black bugs came out of each one. I would like to know what that bug is. It looks like a small beetle. Does anyone know? Please help and let me know what to do to kill them. I never knew of a bug killing plants or building homes in the roots.
How to destroy an ant invasion in a strawberry garden (safely!)? I got a bunch of smart small brown/black ants invading my garden of Veestar (hybrid) strawberries (right in the middle of the garden). They got smart and built a home under the big strawberry leaves. I want to get rid of them without using any man-made chemicals (like Killex and Raid). I dug a little and saw these white little thingies shaped like really small Tic-Tacs (larva? ant eggs?). Will some water drown them without killing the plant? Or how about some vinegar? bash them with a shovel? (lol) What's the safest way to get rid of them without killing/damaging my strawberries? I love my plants a lot.
Am I liable for Capital Gains Tax when selling land? I have a large garden and am confident I can obtain planning permission for a bungalow to be built in my garden. If I decide to sell the plot (without building the new home) am I liable to pay Capital Gains Tax? Mom Knows Nothing - Actually I bought my house and the land came with it. I posted this in the UK section. We do not pay capital gains tax on primary residence here. Hence I am wondering if I have to pay CGT as I will be selling land that is part of my primary residence. Please consider where the person lives when you are good enough to repspond... There is a world outside of Alabama you know!
Im looking for a happy home for my 18 mth old female Labby.? I am currently looking to rehome my 18 mth old female Labrador, called "Nara", meaning companion. She is a beautiful girl , light golden, slight build, but we have been "fostering" her for 12 months and I would like to find her somewhere permanent, a family that will love and appreciate her. She gets along with other dogs and cats and is very well trained for her age. She is not bad in the garden, a few toys keeps her happy and she is happy to go for a walk or a swim. She's not needy and would be great for any family, kids or not. She is very healthy and fully vaccinated, even C5 for boarding. Please let me know if you are interested and I can make contact with further details and photos. Sorry I forgot to add, we live on the Mid North Coast of NSW in Forster. And i am happy to give my email address to anyone who is interested.
Home grown Hops for Homebrewed beer? I bought myself some hop rhizomes from my local homebrew store and I’m getting ready to plant them. My question is the trellis that I need to build – how tall do I really need to go? I’ve read that commercial growers let the vines go 25+ feet. I can’t realistically do that in my back yard. My idea of going the Lowes and getting a 16 ft 4X4 (w/ 2 feet in the ground) has been scratch since I’ve read about the dangers of using pressure treated wood in the garden. Anyone have a suggestion for a free standing system that my wife will not think is an eye sore? Or is the amount of exposure to the pressure treated wood not a real issue?
Whats the best GyroCopter available to the UK market? Taking into account price, quality, ease to use, enjoyment factor and whether its built at home or in a factory. An idea of licenses and laws around getting one and taking off in my front garden, or driving it to a aerodrome and taking off, would be fab!
What is the best season (time of year) to plant trees? I live in central PA. We are building a home on about 2 acres... which is plenty of room to have trees. We are excited to have many trees and shrubs, along with a flower garden on our property. What is the best temperature and soil conditions for planting trees? We are most likely going to choose a variety of shade, evergreen, and flowering trees. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
barratt home planned developments? barratt homes plan to build houses in motherwell @ strathearn gardens
How do you build this bookshelf? Ok... I have 2 problems. On the January 2008 of Better Homes and Gardens, Page 50,there is a picture of a bookshelf that slides. The photo is by Tria Giovan. I need to know how to build that, and i you can't find that please try to find some better pictures. Ok... I have spent the last Three weeks looking for pictures, or anything. I went to the photographer's website, sifted through hundreds of photos on like 10 search engines. I had hoped to find it myself, but, obviously, I need some help.
Anyone can point me to the process of building a home? So you buy the land. Then, do you find a builder that takes care of the whole process or do you have to pay an architect, then find a company, etc? Are there companies that take care of the process A-Z? Any ideas how I can save money? I think I can do a lot of the interior work myself, but the grading, and exterior is harder. I plan to use lots of recycled materials so its cheaper, want to build it green and don't need a very big house, a 2 bedroom + convertible office, 2 bath, 1000-1350 feet. My passion is having the garden/patio be the focal point. Anyone can provide some input on the time it takes? A ballpark figure. I know getting plans approved takes a while. Also, is it better to buy a home and re-model it than build one from scratch? Time-wise, money-wise, hassle-wise?
Would a female in her 20s think a guy in his 20s who hung out in a garden shed is nuts? Currently I"m a guy in his mid 20s who is stuck living at home due to high rental prices. I have thought about building a small garden shed in my parents backyard to read and take naps in. The shed would have a skylight with no windows. The floors would be made of wood with a rug on the floor. Eventually if I enjoy the shed I would put a tv and computer inside. If I became friends with a female or even my male friends would they think I"m nuts to bring them to my garden shed to hang out at night. Bringing friends into my parents house isn't fun. My parents are very nosy. I'm going to be living at home for at least antoher 2-3 years. Some of my male friends think this is a silly idea? My friends are judgemental. This would be a semi-studio apartment without a restroom inside. I would paint the walls green.blue or aqua. The inside of the door would be sky blue, green or dark blue. The door may not have a doornob. On the inside it may have just a latch like restroom stalls. Rents in my area are high. A studio apartment rents out for $1200 per month. A one bedroom rents out for $16-1700 per month. The only way for me to move out of my parents house would be to move to another region. I'm a law abiding citizen. I have never and never will do any illegal drugs. Nor would I want to have anyhting to do with illegal drugs. I'm not into nor have I raped a woman. I just need some space from the rents. I could put in windows and a doornob If I neede to. Even a skylight would be possible. I have a job that pays me too little to rent an apartment. I also live in California. Many people think I'm crazy that I have thought about this idea. I'm age 27 to be exact. The only disadvantage to this shed is that I would have to use the bathroom inside my parents house. No windows could be another problem. The skylight I guess will do.

What would a female in her 20s think of a guy in his 20s who had a garden shed to hang out in? Currently I"m a guy in his mid 20s who is stuck living at home due to high rental prices. I have thought about building a small garden shed in my parents backyard to read and take naps in. The shed would have a skylight with no windows. The floors would be made of wood with a rug on the floor. Eventually if I enjoy the shed I would put a tv and computer inside. AIDS Africa? I plan on taking a trip with with my church to Africa to help build some homes, plant gardens, and help teach the children. My boyfriend say if I go he's not messing with me anymore because the bugs are transmitting AIDS to people. He is also upset with the fact that we will go all the way there to help but so many people need help here. We do plenty of mission work here in this city and others. He feel we are being used by the church for publicty. My questions are can I get the virus by a bug bite? Should I not help over in Africa?

Land access rights wales, self build planned.? I currently live in an end terrace cottage, which has an access road of unknown ownership between the council owned road and my drive (i am currently trying to find out who does own this). My garden is large enough to build a new house and still retain enough land for the cottages garden. My question is, if i build a new house will i have access rights to the new property up this lane? My cottage is the first one in the terrace and my drive, which i would keep ownership of as part of the new property joins directly with this land. I have lived in my current home for about seven years and have played my role in the maintenance of this lane, i have never met an owner and have certainly never seen anyone maintain it. My neighbour has freely accessed this lane (and his friends) for over twenty years. The cottages have been built for over 100 years and clearly access has been maintained during this time without any known dispute. Any suggestion?
Is wanting the garden of my rented house too much to ask for? I moved here in Mar 06 & pay £1000 per month. The garden had never been landscaped as a new build. The landlords paid for decking that my husband built for nothing and have this month reduced the rent by £300 to finish. They have just visited and been extremely rude about the 'state' of the garden and I am incensed. My brother has kindly transported over 5 ton of top soil (and that's a small part of a big uneven garden) and we have put grass seed to this bit but £300 goes nowhere. Surely I am entitled to a garden within the rent that I pay (2 summers now without one) and not feel it is my responsibility? I have always tried to maintain a good relationship with them as I feel they have the upper hand because they are the landlords but I feel very angry. I have never rented before so would someone be kind enough to let me know where I stand here especially as I feel they were derrogatory to my home. It's clean and tidy inside, only the remnants gardening stuff is waiting to be cleared.
Need to Focus and Concentrate better on things in life ? And do not read or answer this PLEASE unless you need to learn to focus and concentrate better ! Thank You. In the mindfulness of breathing we use the breath as the object of our attention. We follow the physical sensations of the breath as it flows in and out of the body. This practice of discipline isn’t really a breathing exercise, for we allow the breath to flow naturally, as we observe it. So there is no control over the breath! The first thing we learn as we practice this disciplinary practice is how distracted our minds are ! We’ll observe all sorts of distracting thoughts and feelings flowing into our minds, and discover that our attention is no longer on our breath. What comes into our minds is not actually very useful, it’s actually bad for us. For example, we feel impelled, driven anxiously, or being easily angered while thinking on something else, or worrying about something we need to accomplish = we are distracted, instead of attentively being in the present moment, following the sensations of our breath. The simple practice behind this disciplinary practice is that we keep bringing our attention back to the breath, over and over again, then our mind gradually quiets/calmns down, and we are content. Preferably this is done with the eyes closed, to minimize distractions. In the mindfulness of breathing we give our breath our full attention. We are simply following the physical sensations of the breath. We start off by following the breath. After a while what tends to happen is we forget all about the breath, as we are carried away by a chain of distracting thoughts, which usually have nothing to do with what we are to be giving our attention to, at this present moment. We usually do not make any conscious decision to think about something outside of this disciplinary practice on our breath, it just simply happens as habitual patterns of behavior come into play. In fact, not only do we not choose to get distracted, we do not have much of a choice at all !! In essence, our habits are controlling us ! It is more like our thoughts are thinking us than we are thinking them ! The fact that we aren’t in control isn’t cause to become despondent – it’s the same for everyone most of the time. We have to become aware of how distracted we really are, before we can do anything about it. So what do we do when we are anxiously driven, worrying, angered, undermining ourselves, dozing off, or fantasizing about things we’d rather be doing ? These activities are not helpful, or fulfilling. And they’re definitely not things we decided to do, they are simply unwholesome habitual things we do when we are not fully aware, when we are not giving our full attention on the breath. These are hindrances to accomplishing one’s goal. There is a Big difference of being mindful, and not being mindful. If we can not be mindful with our breath, we can be mindful throughout our daily activities in life – whether at work, school, home, or wherever we are !! So how do we regain our Attention ? This is a crucial point in the mindfulness of breathing! We do not have to be driven by our unwholesome distracting habits. We can decide we no want to re-enter that distracting world, which are driven by unwholesome habits. We have the opportunity to cultivate our awareness by maintaining the mindfulness of the breath. When we realize we’ve been distracted, with full attention, we take ourselves back to our breath. We can choose not only what to do, by bringing our attention back to our breath, but also how we do it. There can be a strong temptation to be irritated with ourselves, and beat ourselves up over the head, when we’re distracted. But when we do this, we go right back into the uncontrolled habitual pattern of distractedness and we undermine ourselves, continuing to be annoyed or angry. A more creative response is that we take ourselves, our full attention to the breath with as much kindness and Patience AND Gentleness as we can! Instead of giving yourself a hard time about having been distracted, you can congratulate yourself on having brought full attention back to the breath with kindness, gentleness, and patience !! The mind has a natural tendency to wander, just like a young inquisitive animal. So there is no need in being harsh with yourself. How do we develop awareness ? We go back to the breath, which serves as an anchor that helps us stay in complete awareness, to be alert in the present moment. We are practicing recognizing the difference between awareness and unawareness. And we are working on increasing our cognitive thinking skills, memory, concentration, focus, as well as developing the qualities of Patience, kindness, compassion, gentleness, and self-control that are so very important when we realize when we’ve been unaware – when we’ve just come out of being distracted and have regained our awareness. We are also training ourselves to stay out the hindrances. Becoming distracted is a bit like falling over when you’re a child. When we try to follow the breath it’s like we’ve decided to walk. But then after a few steps, we stumble, by being distracted. But we keep picking ourselves up, by going back to the breath. The way a child learns to walk is by taking a few steps, falling, then picking themselves up, over and over again. The way we learn to be build our mind, increase our memory, build more concentration, and to be more aware is by following the breath, getting distracted, and then going back to the breath – over and over and over again. This process builds up the quality of Patience within us. How do we develop Calmness ? Hindrances are not a very satisfying states of mind. Being annoyed, or fantasizing, or undermining ourselves, all involve a lot of mental disharmony. They cause turbulence in our minds, and we find that we are not very calm. The hindrances are states in which we are not very happy. If we are fantasizing, for example – either about things we’d rather be doing, or about things we’re not happy about – then there’s emotional disharmony since we’re not happy what we’re doing. Spending less time in distracting states of mind means that we become more content. And when we’re distracted then we’re not very concentrated - our mind is jumping from one topic to another like a monkey (this is what we call our monkey mind). This doesn’t mean we don’t experience anything very deeply – like when we’re talking to someone and we’re also preoccupied and realize they’ve been talking but we don’t know what they’ve said. That kind of thing doesn’t help us connect very deeply with our experience. And how can we reflect if we can’t keep up a focused train of thought ? And if we can not reflect, how then can we learn ? Practicing mindfulness helps us to be more concentrated so that we can live more deeply, and appreciate life more fully ! As you prepare your body, then become more aware of the physical sensations of your breath. Whenever your mind wander, with patience, gently bring it back to the breath. Then, count after each breath, starting at One, placing a number after each exhalation of breath. When you get to ten, then start again at one. Next, do the same as above, but counting just before each inhalation breath. Next, Narrow your focus, until you are concentrating on the physical sensations of the breath flowing over the rims of your nostrils. Mindfulness of Breathing helps to be much more calm, at peace mentally, more focused, concentration well, in the present moment. And at the same time it energizes us, as it refreshes us within. “In the long term it helps us to develop more awareness so that we have More freedom to choose what our responses are going to be in any given situation. In situations where we might worry, or be angry, or might be anxious, we can now choose instead to cultivate Patience, wisdom, understanding, and a calm, peaceful state of mind.” Practicing Mindfulness is enormously enriching. Instead of being only half aware of what we are doing, we can fully and richly experience every moment of our lives. We’ll begin to enjoy our food more, but especially it will help us to concentrate much better at work, at home, and anywhere we are – in the present moment. It will help us to actually be more present when listening to our family’s and friends, not being distracted by roaming thoughts in our minds while the other person is speaking. It will help us to slow down our speech when speaking to another person, for rapid speech/talking fast, is always a sign of an anxious mind. We’ll begin to speak more slowly, calmly, with self-control, thus giving another our full attention. Many people also practice The Mindfulness of Breathing right before going to sleep, to give them a very calm, sound nights sleep. You might be wondering, Why the Counting of the Breath ? We train our mind, through counting, to keep us well focused. It is very easy to just, as some say, “Space out”, instead of fully practicing the mindfulness of breathing. When we “space out”, we get distracted, without even realizing it. The counting helps to give us a more objective sense of how much of the time we are distracted, and how much we are remaining aware. Counting helps us to measure how long we are maintaining our awareness. At first, it is even hard for us to really stay focused on our breath, for even five breaths. As we develop this discipline, we’ll find ourselves able to go through many cycles(of ten) breaths, before we are distracted. Counting the breath also gives us something to aim for - goal. The numbers help us to develop right effort, as well as to help us build endurance. Everyone gets distracted, even those who have been practicing the mindfulness of breathing for years. It is like having a garden: the first stage in creating a beautiful garden is to realize how many weeds need to cleared away. Dealing with “the weeds” in your mind, brings you inner peace and happiness. It’s as if you’ve just inherited a beautiful garden, which is full of weeds. You just can’t pretend that the weeds aren’t there – you have to do something about them. It is like that with your mind. By just leaving it alone, it will just get worse. The best thing to do is to get started as soon as possible on clearing out those mind – weeds. If you ever feel frustrated with your distractions, then remember that when you’ve been distracted during mindfulness of breathing, you have a choice You can choose to exercise Patience and Gentleness with yourself or you can get impatient, angry, and despondent which will only make things worse. So, as the teenagers say, “Chill” and Patiently continue to clear those weeds from your wild monkey mind. Sometimes you might find counting numbers boring and might want to drop the number altogether. This is often how the beginner feels. If you’ve finally developed a certain stillness and calmness, then you can “temporarily” drop the counting. But this does not happen too often for the beginner. But most often, the desire to drop the counting is a resistance to structure from within us, or caused by the desire to be passive. Sometimes our mind would rather just daydream. Let us be honest with ourselves as to what our real motivation is. If the numbers seem mechanical, then bear in mind that this is not inevitable – it’s a product of the way your mind is working. If you approach the numbers mechanically, then they will seem to be only mechanical to you. But if you approach the numbers gracefully, and creatively, then they’ll seem natural and fluid. One way to contact that natural fluidity is to place the numbers very lightly before and after the breath. Place the numbers very tenderly and with care, as if you are kissing your child on the cheek who has fallen asleep. However, if your mind is very distracted, then you should make the numbers more definite and firm. But try to do it with care. Counting on your fingers working when your mind has been Very distracted; needs to be under control, to come back to the breath. You don’t actually move or touch your fingers, but simply bring your awareness to the fingers, counting on them. When you are Really distracted this helps you to keep your mind more fully anchored than simply counting numbers. This method can be used as a stabilizer, like training wheels for our mind. For some, it quite helpful. After practicing The Mindfulness of Breathing for a few days, step back, and see how things are going. Learning this discipline, is not easy, it is a learned process. Learning the Mindfulness of Breathing involves learning to see ourselves – our (so to speak) warts and all. It requires that we take full responsibility for our thoughts, the words we speak, and our actions, rather than using other people as scapegoats for our own failings, ie: you made me angry, you caused me to react this way, or that way. There are always up and downs in learning any disciplinary skill. Anyone who has ever learned a new skill, like skiing, rollerblading, remembers possibly thinking “this is impossible, I’ll never learn this well, and maybe even regretting ever getting started.” It can be just like that with The Mindfulness of Breathing. But I’d like to remind you that you are not alone, and that you are going through a disciplinary process that many other people have gone through, and have come out of the other side of – successful, happy, and having peace of mind. You do, however discover that you do have some problems, or may I call them, challenges, which you never knew you had. Before you may have just had an irritating co-worker, now you realize that you are responsible for all your own mental states, and that your irritabilities are the construction of your own mind. This realization is a shock, at first. Once you, and all of us, for that matter, realize that we are responsible for our own life, for our own mental and emotional states, then we come closer to cultivating the qualities in us, to counter act those unwholesome states. Mindfulness of Breathing is sometimes like an unflattering mirror. But without this practice, it can be very easy to delude ourselves in seeing ourselves as purer, more gentle, more patient, more kinder, more intellectual, more social, than we really are. Mindfulness of Breathing helps us to see things, and ourselves – as we really are. It polishes the mirror, helping us to clearly see things, situations, other people and especially ourselves as they really are. But we realize that it is best that we deal with things, which we actually have control over, namely – ourselves. And not to harshly judge others, but to take full responsibility for ourselves, our own minds. The Path may even seem hard and rocky, the way at times may even seem impassible, but over time your stamina and resilience “will” improve, and so will your Patience, and Understanding. How to see signs of improvement. Sometimes we do not see improvements within ourselves as quickly as others see the improvements in us. I have people tell me that you are more relaxed, less negatively reactive, more patient, and more friendly. Pay more attention to the fact that you have developed more continuity of awareness, alertness, and do not allow your thoughts to go astray. You are increasing you cognitive abilities, cultivating awareness, concentration, memory; pay attention to these facts. Slowing down in life, paying closer attention to the outside world, being fully present in each and every moment, is a very good indication of improvement. Becoming aware of your thoughts, as you think them, choosing carefully what to speak beforehand, and acting as well as reacting in a wholesome manner, are all excellent signs that you have made much improvement in your practice of your mindfulness of breathing. You remember when you use to be quite impatient, and easily angered, and are now much more patient. You are able to catch your responses, choosing a more creative way to respond. That calm, mental Peace is the umpire of your mind and heart !!
She lives in UK in an ex-council house on an estate. She tried council for marked bay which was approved but would have to be opposite side of road to my aunts house due to road layout and it needed her neighbours approval to go ahead. Sadly they are not pleasant people, neither is the area where she lives and this neighbour refused so it couldnt be done. It is not illegal for anyone to park in these bays anyway, they are just a polite request to get people to be considerate and leave room for a resident. However in her neighbourhood my guess is even if it was outside her own house others would just park there themselves so probably pointless..
Need some advice about my Jungle!? The residential area I live in was once woodland. Now they have built all these homes and garden we still have the problem with woodland plants and weeds...........You would not believe what I am fighting to get rid of in my lawn which is made up of thistles, underground elder, stinging nettles, doc leaves, you name it. Another problem is bramble runners they are appearing from everywhere and grow about 12" every couple of days....it is a nightmare. Along with this we have an invasion of red ants and woodland spiders. The whole area is under a blanket of spiders webs 365 days of the year and we have problems with rats too! I have been treating my lawns with "Weed and Feed" but it is not making difference with the weed problem. It is very difficult to grow anything in my garden other than weeds.................any advice would be most welcome. Thank you.
